This painting was based on a still- life by the Flemish artist Osias Beert the Elder ( about1580-1624) displayed at the Ashmolean in Oxford.
Still- life paintings originated in the 1500s when artists began to make independant compositions from inanimate objects such as fruit and flowers which had previously featured in religious and historical compositions. It appeared first in Italy but it is a form of art which is associated above all with 17 th century Dutch and Flemish artists. Many of these artists specialised in one branch of still- lfe painting -flowers, fruit, fish, smoking utensils etc. Some had a symbolic meaning referencing the transience of life ( vanitas).
Beautiful George, how long did it take you?
Very impressive painting George, well done! Like Amanda, I didn't know anything about alkyd oils, so thanks. They have certainly been very successful here. Helen
This looks fabulous George, well done, I have not heard of alkyd oils, the finish looks a little bit like pastels.
Oh George this is fantastic.
Not as dark as the original and some of your flowers have a little bit of a soft texture.
The bottom half feels a bit stronger than the top section. The rose and 'love in a mist' are wonderful. As well as the bowl, it feels very heavy, solid and real glazed stoneware!
Brilliant. Are you pleased?
